Mazarakis is founder and president of Tula Foods which is selling Better Whey of Life Greek yogurts. Greek yogurt now makes up 20 percent of all yogurt sales, according to SymphonyIRI, a market research company.
Consumer data from Neilsen shows that the sales of Greek yogurt has surged 100 percent in each of the least three years. Non-Greek yogurt has been measured as growing by single numbers during that same period.
Mazarakis’ company, based in Evanston, Illinois, is riding the popular wave with its new entries into the yogurt market. The timing was perfect for her.
Mazarakis said she entered the yogurt market in order to offer a low-fat and low-sugar alternative to Dannon and Yoplait. She said her Better Whey brand offers better nutrition, more protein and less sugar.
Yogurt watchers in the industry give her brand high marks for the tart flavor and creamy texture that is capturing yogurt lovers.
Mazarakis worked for a number of years in Kraft Foods. She said she found inspiration by creating a product that would help people to live longer and healthier lives. Thus, Tula Foods was born. The company is named after her mother.
Mazarakis branded the Better Whey of Life yogurt by branding the way she thought. She created the word “food-losophy.” The word means giving a clear direction on how to eat better.
