?The tradition of the Olympics originated in ancient Greece, so it is not a stretch to imagine that Greece would display many amazing and talented athletes at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. So far in these games, the Greeks have won a total of two medals. Both of these medals are bronze third place medals.
In men’s 90 kg judo, the competition was fierce. Ilias Iliadis of Greece was able to battle his way to a third place victory, tying with Masashi Nishiyama of Japan. The Greeks gained their other bronze medal in the women’s lightweight double sculls. This rowing competition is comprised of teams of two. Christina Giazitzidou and Alexandra Tsiavou were the women who were able to bring home the medal for Greece.
Although they have already displayed a great deal of athleticism and a strong sense of competition, the Greeks are surely hoping to pick up even more medals as the London Olympics progress. During the next few days of competition, the Greeks will compete in a number of different events. Many Greek runners will compete in both sprints and longer distance races. The Greeks will also continue to fight for a win in water sports such as water polo, sailing and rowing.
Olympic viewers will also be able to spot Greek athletes Alexia Kyriazi and Eleni Doika in women’s rhythmic gymnastics. Olegk Motsalin will compete for Greece in the wrestling competition and Alexandros Nikolaidis will compete in taekwondo. No matter what happens, the rest of the Olympics are sure to prove exciting for the Greeks.
